How to extend the life of your furnace

Your furnace is an intricate piece of machinery that not only provides you heat in the cold months, but if it’s not cleaned out properly or leaked or cracked, it can be considered an inefficient dust and particle distributor. In order to keep your furnace running smoothly and quite possibly extend its life duration, here are some great tips you need to know.

If you choose not to have an annual inspection and want to tackle this on your own, you will first need to look at your outside condenser to see if the coil is plugged with dirt. A dirty or blocked condenser can really affect your furnaces efficiency.

If you want to take this on yourself, turn on the power from the outside, and disconnect it on the main electrical panel 24 hours before turning on the air conditioner at the thermostat. This will ensure that the oil in the compressor is warm.

It’s also a good idea to inspect the coil above the furnace to see if it may need cleaning. If the coil is plugged, it will freeze up and very little cooling will be achieved. At the same time, the drain pan needs to be inspected for clogs, cracks and leaks.

Due to the high amount of moisture that surrounds your furnace, you will also want to check for mould on the coil. If mould is found on the coil then this must be cleaned. For health reasons, consider buying a UV light to prevent mould build up.

All of this can be looked after by calling us for an annual inspection if you do not wish to do it yourself.
